Prosor sends protests to UN over Gaza rocket attacks

UN ambassador criticizes Security Council for lack of statement following attacks near Eilat, says Gaza has become home to Hamas terrorism.

Israel issued a complaint to the UN secretary general and the president of the Security Council over the escalation of violence in the South and over the Security Council's failure to condemn the terror attacks last Thursday that claimed the lives of eight people, Israel Radio reported Tuesday.Ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor wrote to the UN leaders that the Gaza Strip, ruled by Hamas, continues to be a bastion for terrorist activity, adding that over a hundred rockets were fired against Israel in the recent days.

Lebanon blocked the Security Council on Friday from issuing a statement condemning the previous day’s terrorist attacks in southern Israel.
Beirut demanded that the statement drafted by the Israeli delegation be amended to include criticism of Israel’s retaliatory air strikes on Gaza.
Unanimity is a requisite for Security Council statements.
Last Wednesday, the day before the attacks near Eilat led to a spasm of violence bewteen Gaza and Israel, Prosor sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday demanding that the body condemn rocket attacks against Israel.
"Israel expects the Security Council, the Secretary-General, and the international community to condemn all of these attacks immediately and unequivocally," Prosor wrote.
Noting an increase of rocket fire emanating from the Gaza Strip in recent weeks, Prosor added, "It is only by chance that these most recent attacks did not cause civilian casualties. With rockets continuing to rain down on our major cities, Israel cannot and will not rely on good luck to defend its citizens."
