IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Daniel Hagari on Sunday morning said that "the IDF is ready to crush Hamas' rule" as it prepares for likely the largest land invasion of Gaza since the 2005 withdrawal.

At the same time, Hagari said that Hamas had failed to launch any new even small invasions into the Gaza corridor since Sunday afternoon and had not fired any rockets since Sunday night, despite both of those activities having continued almost nonstop since Hamas started the war on October 7.

Hagari warned Israeli citizens not to become complacent, noting that Hamas still "has significant capabilities" even after eight days of overwhelming IDF airstrikes.

It was unclear why Hamas has held off from its two main sources of attacks on Israel since Sunday, but one possibility might be that it expected an imminent IDF counter-invasion after an IDF deadline for evacuating civilians from Gaza passed late Saturday.

A senior Israeli official accused Iran on Sunday of trying to open a second war front by deploying weapons in or through Syria as Israel steps up a counter-offensive in Gaza to the south.

Responding to a post on the X social-media platform that posited such a scenario, Joshua Zarka, head of strategic affairs for Israel's Foreign Ministry, said: "They (Iranians) are."

The original post also said "the Israelis are determined to prevent" such developments. To that, Zarka responded: "We are."

US President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli and Palestinian leaders amid a push for a humanitarian corridor to help Palestinian civilians caught in the crossfire of the Gaza war as the IDF prepares for a military ground campaign against Hamas.

Biden discussed with Netanyahu his US efforts “to ensure innocent civilians have access to water, food, and medical care” and “affirmed his support for all efforts to protect civilians,” the White House said in describing the fifth call between the two men since October 7.

The Hamas assault against southern Israel that Saturday, in which the terror group killed over 1,300 civilians and soldiers, has been widely condemned.

Attention is rapidly turning, however, to the fate of Palestinian civilians who have no ability to escape the IDF’s military campaign to destroy Hamas. Egypt has yet to agree to open its border and Hamas has declared that they must remain in the Strip.
