A-G Weinstein shelves bribery investigation into former PM Barak

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein on Thursday announced that he would not proceed with an investigation into allegations that former prime minister Ehud Barak received illegal benefits while holding an elected office.

Allegations first arose after former prime minister Ehud Olmert was heard saying in a recorded conversation that Barak had illegally received millions of dollars in bribes as part of arms and weapons transactions when he served as his then defense minister.

Weinstein was first asked to investigate the matter in November of 2014 after Channel 10 aired a tape-recorded conversations between Olmert and his former top aide, Shula Zaken, in which he tells her of the allegations.

Barak denied all the charges levied against him.

In the tapes, Olmert is heard telling Zaken that Barak “has millions, tens of millions, stashed away in secret bank accounts in Switzerland, or somewhere,” which he allegedly illegally skimmed off weapons deals.
