Bill requiring MKs to always appear with a flag makes headway

The Israeli flag will wave at many more events, if a bill approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Sunday becomes law.
The proposal by MK Oren Hazan (Likud) states that a flag must be posted at every event in which an MK or minister participates.
Hazan’s legislation was inspired by a Haaretz conference in New York last December, during which the Israeli flag was removed from the room when Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat spoke. The MK also said that recently, the police disrespected the flag by not allowing protesters to enter an event at which a politically active Arab rapper performed, because they waved Israeli flags.
“A country that wants to survive must protect its symbols,” Hazan stated. “Unfortunately, recently, even a stirring symbol like the flag is being trampled on.”
Referring to the Joint List, Hazan said he heard “members of the Palestinian List” said they would disobey the law.
“It’s clear to me that they would prefer to wrap themselves in Hamas or ISIS flags,” the MK said.
