Israeli police officer suspected of sexually assaulting child

The Police Investigations Department arrested a 45-year-old police officer on Wednesday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl.
According to the PID the officer, a resident of central Israel, is suspected of assaulting a daughter of his acquaintance. Ynet reported that the officer was previously investigated five years ago on suspicions of indecent assault against two minors and for alleged child pornography found on his computer.
The suspect was brought to the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for a remand hearing. Speaking to Ynet, his Attorney Kobi Palomo said the suspect denied the allegations against him.
“This is a suspicion in a serious and exceptional case, and the Israel Police will assist the Police Investigations Department in any way in order to arrive at the truth,” police said in a statement on Wednesday, adding, “The police will act according to the law and will take all administrative measures against suspects in these acts.”
A substitute teacher, Shaul Shamai, 49, was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of indecently touching a “significant number” of girls in the second grade at a northern Tel Aviv school, as well as making sexually explicit comments, police said. The incident caused outrage as teacher was convicted a month before his arrest of indecent assault of a 12-year-old girl. However, in January, before his conviction, he was able to secure a police approval for teaching, as the law only prohibits this for those convicted of sexual offenses. After his conviction the suspect continued working as a substitute teacher.
