The Israel Democracy Institute is hosting a day-long series of panel discussions involving prominent public figures, religious leaders and academics focusing on the issue of Jewish identity and the changing boundaries of this concept.Author Leon Wieseltier will discuss Jewish identity from a personal perspective while Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, chief rabbi of Efrat and head of a new conversion court, will be one of three panelists discussing how a person can become Jewish.Perhaps the most novel and fascinating idea to be discussed will be that of Jewish identity via personal choice, a phenomenon that has been observed in recent years in which people who have no Jewish parents and have not converted nevertheless identify as Jewish and participate in Jewish life.Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky will participate in the final panel which will examine the notion of Jewish solidarity in an age of increasing pluralism.
