Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin held at least one impromptu conversation Sunday in Paris. The two men have not spoken since the downing of the Russian plane in Syria on September 17. Moscow holds that Israeli actions led to the downing of the plane by Syrian anti-missile aircraft. An initially scheduled meeting between the two men had been scheduled to formally meet in Paris, but then canceled. But they then did manage to talk on the sidelines of an event at the Elysee Palace in Paris.Netanyahu told reporters that the “conversation was very good and to the point, I would say very important.”He refused to elaborate any further on the conversation. In an unusual manner Netanyahu held a public on the record press conference in the afternoon in Hebrew at his hotel near the Arche de Triomphe, to answer questions from Israeli reporters.Earlier in the day he participated in the France’s formal ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.But the issue of the indictments of his close associates in the submarine affair followed him to Paris, where ehe cautioned reporters to wait until the end of the process. With regard to Gaza, he said, “I am working in every way possible to return the calm” to the southern border with Gaza, byNetanyahu said he was willing to allow for Qatari paid fuel into Gaza and the cash to pay for the civil servants.
He said that there would in the future be oversight over the money, but that in th moment he wants to avoid a needles war in Gaza.‘I am not afraid of a war, but I want to prevent one if I can,” Netanyahu said.
