Hamas operative killed in tunnel collapse for the second time this week

The military wing of Hamas, Izzadin Kassam Brigades, released a statement saying that a member of the brigade, was killed when the tunnel collapsed on him. He was the second Hamas operative to be killed in a collapsed tunnel this week.Since the 2014 Operation Protective Edge offensive, some new tunnels have been discovered and there has been many reports of tunnels collapsing during construction.After the IDF uncovered a tunnel extending into Israeli territory in April, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that Israel has developed a cutting-edge tunnel technology to locate tunnels.In May the IDF detected a deep Hamas attack tunnel, stretching from the southern Gaza Strip into Israel.The 30-meter deep shaft was likely dug after Operation Protective Edge, according to an IDF assessment, though this has not been verified.In October, three ISIS-sympathizing Israeli men were accused of attempting to build a tunnel from the Arab town of Taiba into the West Bank.The investigation into the incident revealed that the group had intended to use the tunnel to smuggle weapons into Israel, and “prepare for ‘Judgment Day.’”Eight Palestinian operatives were wounded in August when a tunnel collapsed in Shuja'yya in the Gaza Strip.
