The Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed in a big ceremony at the White House on 1979. The Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, United States President Jimmy Carter, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin joined hands and shared big smiles.
But it seems that those smiles, at that time, turned into anger over the years. In a funny way, the Egyptian Ministry of Education called the police and asked to open an investigation because they “suddenly” found the Israeli flag instead of the “Palestinian” flag in the 8th grade curriculum.
In the Egyptian curriculum, the land of Israel is conceptualized, historically and morally, as a land that was stolen from the original Arab inhabitants of "Palestine", while the State of Israel is depicted as a country born in sin, not as the realization of a legitimate national movement.
I am full of optimism when I see Sisi's new approach to Egypt-Israel relations, and his strong desire to change the situation, but the Egyptian Ministry of Education still sees Israel as its main enemy.
Curriculum in schools generally regarded as a hot-button issue, which shapes the historical narratives and norms that define a given society’s identity, goals and values.
So the main question here is: why the Egyptian Ministry of Education Insists on keeping the language of hatred and not peace?
