The story of Don Giovanni is of the story of the unrestrained Spanish lover who seduces and deserts women, and even murders the father of one of the women he lusts. The inevitable end is of course tragic.
Video Mapping, also called Projection mapping, is a new Augmented Reality technology in which video is projected on three dimensional surfaces that can be synchronized with the existing decoration.
The use of video art adds a visual layer to the dramatic message of this opera, with abstract metaphors blurring reality and illusion. As I have personal interest in multimedia and augmented reality, I am quite keen to see it!
This is yet another innovative production after the previous, somewhat controversial opera where Eran Riklin situated Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1930’s Hollywood. There, the stage decoration was minimal and partially replaced by a (rather enchanting) show of lights. Short videos clips were screened during the opera and the singers were dressed like 1930 film industry staff.
Don Giovanni will be sung in Italian with English and Hebrew surtitles. The premiere will be on February 8th. Don Giovanni will play between 8-23 February, 2018, at the Tel Aviv Opera House.
