Ford is not only canceling plans for a 7-seater electric crossover and delaying the launch of electric vans: it is going further for the gasoline engine and is seriously working on a 4-door version of the Mustang.

According to reports in the US, the American manufacturer has already shown sketches of the new model to selected agents in preparation for making a decision on series production. This is not the first time that Ford is considering such a model: a prototype was built as early as 1963, during work on the original Mustang. Not many know this , but the original 1964 Mustang was actually based on Ford's small family car in America the Falcon, itself a 4-door.

Even then the dilemma was clear: a more useful model, with a real rear seat, but less sporty in its design, regardless of which power unit will be installed under the hood. When the Mustang itself was still young, and became a hit with the 2-door coupe and convertible versions, it was decided to cancel the additional version.

What did we think of the current Mustang?

Now it's back: Ford CEO Jim Farley said back in 2022 that the company is considering such a model, and recently said that it is "possible." A 4-door Mustang could be a competition to the corresponding model of the new Dodge Charger that will be launched next year , and bring one of the latest muscle cars a new audience, looking for the V8 performance and sound, but also looking for a more useful back seat.

After Ford already used the Mustang name in the electric Mach E, a 4-door version probably won't do more damage to the reputation of a sports car that has been in production for 60 years. It is clear that it will have to have a V8 version, including the more powerful "dark horse" version, with 500 instead of 450 hp and chassis improvements accordingly. And above all, even if the transition to electric cars has slowed down, the direction is clear. The moment is approaching when if Ford does not launch a Mustang gasoline 4 now Doors, this will never happen again.

What will the future Mustang sedan look like? This computer simulation is amateurish, but certainly gives a glimpse of direction.
