On December 12, 2023, the fifth candle of Hanukkah, Lieutenant Colonel Liel Chia was killed in battle in Shejaia during the "Iron Swords" war. Liel, a brave fighter and beloved commander, was an extraordinary person who left a lasting impact on the hearts of all who knew him.
His comrades in the reconnaissance unit shared that Liel was a unique figure: a natural-born leader, who knew how to unite everyone, solve problems creatively, and provide a sense of security to his soldiers.
Liel invested wholeheartedly in his soldiers. He knew how to identify each one’s strengths, empower them, and push them toward excellence. After his death, the commander of the Golani Brigade told his family, "Liel trained his soldiers at the highest level, the level of the reconnaissance unit." He loved them, never gave up on anyone, and knew how to lead them with humility, determination, and joy for life.
In the last battle, when he saw the danger posed to his soldiers, Liel chose to go in first, protect them, and carry out the mission. In his courageous act, he saved their lives but paid with his own.
His heroism and sense of mission will remain forever as an example and inspiration.
After his passing, the "In His Way" organization was established to commemorate Liel’s memory and legacy.
The organization is working to establish "Liel Lookout" – a scenic lookout point to be built at the "Elisha" preparatory school, where Liel was educated, and will serve as an inspiration for young people aspiring to contribute to the people and the state.
The lookout will also include a monument for the eight soldiers who fell with him in that battle: Lt. Col. Yitzhak Ben Best, Lt. Col. Tomer Greenberg, Maj. Moshe Brown, Maj. Roy Meldasi, Maj. Ben Shali, Sgt. Rom Hecht, Sgt. Achia Deskal, and Sgt. Eran Aloni.
On Thursday, December 26, 2024, the second night of Hanukkah, there will be an event for the dedication of the lookout at the Elisha preparatory school. The public is invited to participate.
Every public donation will help commemorate the memory of brave soldiers who made it possible for us to continue living in our sacred land and strengthen the future generation of our state.
