With the complexities of modern life, the desire to take a break and unwind is encouraging many to explore desert-inspired tourism. However, such getaways often come with a hefty price tag. So, how can one enjoy the tranquility of the desert, drawing inspiration from its design, without leaving home? The answer is simple: create your own desert oasis. Designing a desert-like environment can bring calm, help disconnect from the noise, and create a peaceful retreat. Here’s how to achieve it.

“The desert design ‘speaks’ to many people,” explains Dorit Sela, an architect and designer. “There’s a general consensus that a desert-style space feels warm and inviting, using natural and authentic materials, soft and pleasant colors. These elements can blend well with various styles, including the modern aesthetic that many find appealing. The simplicity and lack of strong colors highlight the space, allowing for a rich play of light and shadow, connecting us to the desert language.”

"Textured plaster with a sandy finish can elevate walls, giving a rounded, warm look to the space," adds Sela. "This plaster provides an old, embracing texture, bringing a desert ambiance indoors. For a desert-inspired design, invest in plastering all walls or select a few main ones—both approaches work."

Ella Shlomov from ELLA DÉCOR adds, "After choosing the plaster, it’s essential to pay attention to textiles. Natural fabrics and sandy tones, true to the desert concept, add depth and calm to the room. Don’t overload the design—keep it minimalist to maintain flow and openness, just like in the desert itself." Combine soft curtains, desert-colored bedding, decorative pillows, and natural or modern rugs in earthy tones. According to her, “If white was once the standard, now ‘the desert’ comes into play with warm, pleasant vibes, suitable for central spaces in the home.”

Once the walls and textiles are taken care of, it’s time to choose the furniture. "Incorporate natural elements, rough textures, and harmoniously blended items—such as wood, wicker, and rattan in varied tones, from light, sandy hues to darker, clay-like shades reminiscent of desert soil and vegetation," says Hila Hareli, an interior designer and head of OKNIN, a luxury furniture gallery. Recently, OKNIN introduced the Italian brand NATURE DESIGN, known for furniture inspired by Mother Nature, from the materials used to the organic shapes of the pieces. Blend in glass, leather, and faux leather to create a unique, rich look.

Avoid overcrowding the space with excessive elements, allowing for "breathing room" and openness, just like the desert. Clean storage solutions will help keep each area pristine and tidy, crafting a spacious, luxurious, and calming desert-inspired home.
