Apple is expected to launch the second generation of the AirTag in the middle of next year. According to a report, the overall design of the device will remain similar to the original model but will include three main improvements: An improved range, a more advanced wireless chip, and improvements in privacy security.

The first AirTag was launched in April 2021 after years of rumors and leaks. In fact, mentions of a device under the code name "B389" were discovered in iOS 13 back in 2019, and the leaks surrounding the product sparked a lot of interest. The AirTag was developed as a small, round device that allows tracking items such as keys, bags, wallets, and more, using Apple’s "Find My" system. The device uses UWB (Ultra-Wideband) technology for precise tracking and enables users to receive accurate guidance to the device’s location via a compatible iPhone.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the new model of the AirTag, codenamed "B589," is in an advanced stage of production testing and is expected to include significant improvements. The enhanced range and updated wireless chip are expected to offer better performance, which could improve the user experience and enable more efficient tracking. However, one of the most interesting aspects of the new model is the emphasis on improving user privacy.

Since the launch of the first model, there have been instances where the AirTag was used for illegal purposes, such as unauthorized tracking of people. Some users even modified the device to disable the built-in speaker, making it harder to detect the tracking. According to reports, Apple has set out to address this issue and is expected to introduce mechanisms in the new model that will strengthen privacy protection and prevent abuse.

This is a much-needed upgrade for the AirTag, especially in light of the criticisms in recent years regarding the use of the AirTag for problematic purposes. It is still unclear how the enhanced protection will be implemented, but the changes may include a combination of software and physical measures that limit the ability to modify the device or use it without the owner’s knowledge.

The AirTag is one of Apple’s standout products in the field of the "Internet of Things" (IoT) and has been highly successful among users. However, the privacy concerns and other issues have posed a major challenge for Apple. If the reports prove true, the new model could improve trust in the product and lead to wider usage. Based on the current development pace, it seems that Apple will meet its timelines and launch AirTag 2 in mid-2025.
