The current generation of the Audi Q5 has been with us since 2016, which is an eternity in the automotive industry, especially in a category with competitors like the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, and others that have since been renewed with one or two generations. Now, the manufacturer introduces its latest iteration and clarifies: the launch of the electric Q6 does not mean that Audi is abandoning the internal combustion engine.
Along with it comes a new platform called PPC - Premium Platform Combustion, which will serve the manufacturer's new gasoline models and was already introduced with the new A5. In the first stage of unveiling the model, the manufacturer is updating the engine offerings but does not yet provide performance data, dimensions, or weights. These are expected to be released soon when the vehicle completes its full certification.
The exterior design is sportier than the outgoing generation, featuring Audi's new grille and generous air intakes on the bumper. The new LED lighting units at the front and OLED at the rear continue to be one of Audi's signature elements, showing the brand's affection for this advanced (and very expensive) lighting system.
Inside the cabin, unsurprisingly, there are multiple screens, including an 11.9-inch instrument panel, a 14.5-inch multimedia screen powered by an Android system, and an optional additional 10.9-inch screen for the passenger. Standard and optional features include a head-up display, a 15W wireless charger, front Type-C ports with 60W charging capacity for ultra-fast charging, and 100W rear ports capable of powering devices like a laptop. The system is wirelessly compatible with Android and Apple, features over-the-air updates (OTA), remote vehicle control, active noise-cancellation technology, and more.
At this stage, the offered engines include a 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 204 horsepower and 34.6 kgm of torque. A diesel engine with the same displacement and power output but with a higher torque rating of 40.8 kgm will also be available. The American market will receive a more powerful version of the engine, delivering 268 horsepower. These engines are supported by mild hybrid technology with a 48V motor and a 1.7 kWh battery that can be charged either by the engine or by using braking energy. The electric assist not only allows for the engine to shut off while supporting the electrical systems for longer periods, but also enables electric "gliding" at certain cruising speeds or when approaching a stop. All versions will be offered with front-wheel or all-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
According to a press release, plug-in hybrid versions will be introduced later. These are expected to be part of the new generation of the manufacturer's plug-in hybrid engines and will offer an electric range of up to 100 kilometers.
Above these versions, there will also be a muscular SQ5 version. Here, the engine is a 3.0-liter V6 producing 367 horsepower and 56 kgm of torque. As in the past, this version will only be offered with all-wheel drive. In addition to the higher power output, it will also feature sporty dampers, a lowered chassis, and stronger brakes. Air suspension will be offered as an option.
In Israel, Champion Motors will launch the new Q5 at the beginning of 2025.
