As the weather cools and the air dries out, our hair faces significant challenges—dryness, static electricity, split ends, and even increased shedding. During this season, it’s especially important to know how to properly care for your hair to keep it healthy, soft, and shiny. Ilan Margalit, L'Oréal Professionnel ambassador and hair care expert, explains the common hair issues in winter and offers valuable tips for effective care and optimal treatment during the season.

Common Winter Hair Issues

1. Dryness and Split Ends

Cold, dry air strips hair of moisture, leaving it brittle and lifeless. Low temperatures also cause split ends, making hair appear damaged and weak.

2. Static Electricity

Dry hair is more prone to static. The combination of dry indoor air and friction from hats and clothing causes frizz and flyaways, which may lead to breakage, especially in fine or delicate hair.

3. Breakage from Hats and Collars

While hats, scarves, and collars keep us warm, they create constant friction with our hair. This friction can damage the outer layer (cuticle), causing breakage and making hair look frizzy.

4. Scalp Irritation

Cold, dry air—especially in heated indoor spaces—can dry and irritate the scalp, leading to itchiness, dandruff, and discomfort.

5. Increased Hair Shedding

Winter is associated with higher hair-shedding rates. Fluctuating temperatures, scalp sensitivity to cold, and frequent transitions between hot and cold environments can weaken hair. Excessive indoor heating also dries out the scalp, contributing to hair loss.

Winter Haircare Tips

1. Use a Moisturizing Mask

Hair needs extra hydration in winter. Rich, moisturizing masks can help maintain softness and shine. Apply a mask once a week with ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, or coconut oil to lock in moisture and prevent split ends.

2. Apply Heat Protection Before Drying

If you use a hairdryer, always apply a heat-protectant spray. Heat protectants form a barrier around the hair, shielding it from damage. Use the lowest possible heat setting and dry gently, as high temperatures can dry out hair further and cause breakage.

3. Use Hair Oils

Applying oil to hair, especially on the ends, helps retain moisture and prevents breakage. Natural oils like argan, jojoba, or olive oil soften hair, shield it from weather damage, and enhance its healthy appearance. Apply a small amount after washing, on damp or dry hair.

4. Nourish from Within

Maintaining a balanced diet is especially crucial in winter since healthy hair starts from the inside. Foods rich in proteins, vitamins (especially B vitamins and vitamin E), healthy fats, iron, and zinc support hair health. Incorporate fish, nuts, almonds, and leafy greens into your diet.

Coping with Winter Hair Shedding

To reduce hair loss, focus on a protein-rich diet with zinc, B vitamins, and iron. Massage your scalp with natural oils to stimulate blood circulation and strengthen roots. Additionally, avoid:

1. Frequent Washing

Washing hair daily can strip away natural oils that protect against dryness. Limit washing to two or three times a week, as needed, to preserve natural moisture and prevent dryness.

2. Hot Water

Very hot water can damage the hair’s outer layer, opening cuticles and leaving hair dull and dry. Wash with lukewarm water and finish with cool water to close cuticles and lock in shine.

3. Rough Towel-Drying

When drying hair after washing, use a soft towel and handle gently. Rough drying can damage the hair cuticles and cause breakage. Pat gently with the towel to absorb excess water.

4. Tight Hats

Tight hats exert pressure on the scalp and can increase hair breakage along the hairline. Choose breathable, natural fabrics for hats and avoid overly tight fits to protect your hair without causing damage.
