Intel recently unveiled its new processor, Lunar Lake, designed for laptops and offering exceptional artificial intelligence capabilities. The new processor shows impressive performance with up to 120 trillion operations per second (TOPS), a performance improvement of up to 50% and an 80% lower power consumption than the previous generation.
Zohar Tsaba, vice president of the computing division at Intel Israel and director of the Lunar Lake and Panther Lake program, tells about the new generation of AI processors and the importance of the State of Israel in the development. Tsaba is a vice president in the customer computing group and the technical program manager in the customer platform programs office. He leads the execution of Intel Core platforms in laptops and desktops. His responsibilities include managing the execution of the group for Lunar Lake & Panther Lake.
The development of this processor began in the company's laboratories and offices in Haifa. "We placed the bet in the right places, and today it is proving itself in an exceptional way. For the first time, we enable battery life that will last a laptop for an entire day with 20 hours of video playback. It is the product of Intel's decades of work and strong engineering capabilities."
According to Tsaba, "there are three main vectors in the processor: The most powerful AI engine on the market today, with an entire ecosystem around it, insane energy efficiency and amazing graphics without an additional graphics accelerator. It's amazing, and it once again beats everything on the market in terms of competition."
The small processor, which can now replace powerful and large graphics cards, gives computer manufacturers new ideas on how to fill the empty space and utilize the energy that was released. "It's not just a graphics card that's on the processor," says Tsaba. "The AI processor sits on the processor as well as the memory. We integrated it, and in the end all these small and efficient factors are blown up in performance for any use you want to imagine."
Tsaba also speaks of Intel's investment in the broad ecosystem of the artificial intelligence world. "We are working with over 150 software development companies, so that already today there will be over 300 additional new features on this engine, so that you can do anything you want, such as making special videos or putting a picture of yourself on the moon."
He adds: "We use the capabilities of AI for development as well. To develop the next chip, we use the capabilities of the AI in almost every aspect of the processor design and its capabilities."
For Tsaba it is important to emphasize the work of the Israeli team in Haifa, especially against the background of the war and the shooting at the northern settlements. "There was a very strong Israeli transport here. A large part of Intel's flagship products were developed in Intel Israel, and there is a lot of credit to the Israeli team here at all levels of Intel's management, in Israel and around the world. In the last year, which was so challenging, what the employees did here was special. There were workers here who had to go to the reserves, workers who were evacuated from their homes, and no one missed, and they worked with insane quality. We really need to take our hats off and thank each and every one of the people who made this happen. We also received support and full support from the management side, we gave everything needed to make it successful, and you see the results."
