1 killed in Hod Hasharon crane collapse

Crane operator also hurt; police checking if accident occurred due to weather.

A crane collapsed at a construction site in Hod Hasharon, killing one person, Israel Radio reported Friday morning.

The crane’s operator, a 55-year-old woman and a 20-year-old tractor driver who was nearby when the crane collapsed, were seriously injured.

The man later succumbed to his injuries at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva.

Teams from Kfar Saba police were examining whether the crane collapsed due to malfunction or because of the stormy weather.

The crane also damaged a store and several other buildings where it hit the ground.

Route 40, near the construction site where the accident occurred, wasopened for traffic late Friday morning after it had been closed downseveral hours before. Most streets adjacent to the site were still shutoff.

Police asked residents of the area not to return to their homes untilthe investigation is concluded. The Industry, Trade and Labor Ministryalso opened an investigation in order to find why the crane collapsed.
