15 years for man who stabbed mother of 11 to death

A 23-year-old man who stabbed a mother of 11 to death during a birthday party will spend 15 years in prison, the Haifa District Court ruled on Sunday.

Ali Bashtawi, from Yafia-an-Naseriyye in the Galilee, pleaded guilty to manslaughter after stabbing 52-year-old Hafizeh Hujirat to death in 2009 during her daughter's birthday party. He became violent when Hujirat had asked him to leave after a neighbor complained about noise.

The judges rejected Bashtawi's argument that he had been under the influence of alcohol, saying that excessive drinking was a problem in Israel that contributed to increasing violence.

Bashtawi was also ordered to pay NIS 80,000 compensation to four of Hujirat's children, one of whom he also stabbed.
