Supreme court calls for expanded seven-panel hearing for Western Wall case

The High Court of Justice announced Monday that it will hold another hearing on the petitions for equal access to the Western Wall for progressive prayer in front of an expanded panel of seven justices.
The court held a hearing in front of three judges in August, where then-Supreme Court President Miriam Naor intimated that the court would consider instructing the government to unfreeze the suspended Western Wall agreement from January 2016, which would have created a state-recognized egalitarian section at the southern end of the Western Wall.
The court also issued an interim order against the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, the police and the Religious Services Ministry, demanding explanations as to why the authorities do not secure the prayer services of the Women of the Wall prayer group and fail to prevent the routine disturbances to their prayer services every month.
