Bribery, fraud trial against Ramat Gan mayor starts

The trial of Ramat Gan’s former mayor of 24 years, Zvi Bar, on charges of bribery, fraud, money-laundering and other offenses opened on Tuesday in the Tel Aviv District Court.
Bar denies all of the charges which include accusations of accepting around NIS 2 million in bribes in running a series of illegal interventions in real estate transactions in Ramat Gan.
In its opening statement, the prosecution said that Bar made sure that he was the gatekeeper of all real estate transactions, ensuring that developers could only move forward by paying him off.
Bar announced his resignation in July during a petition to the High Court of Justice filed by an NGO to fire him, though he served out his term until the October elections.
