Cabinet approves envoy to Egypt

The cabinet on Sunday approved the appointment of David Govrin as ambassador to Cairo, replacing Haim Koren who has served there since September 2014. T
he cabinet also approved the appointment of Guy Feldman to Nigeria, and Boaz Rudkin as nonresident ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, in addition to his current duties as ambassador to Albania.
Govrin, who speaks Arabic and has a doctorate in Middle East history, is currently the director of the Foreign Ministry’s Jordan and North Africa Department, coordinating ties with Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia. He has served in the past at the embassy in Cairo.
Govrin will be Israel’s 13th ambassador to Egypt since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1980. During the same period there have been six Egyptian ambassadors to Israel.
Egypt’s current ambassador to Israel, Hazem Khairat, arrived in January, the first resident Egyptian envoy since then-president Mohamed Morsi withdrew then-ambassador Atef Salem in 2012 during Operation Pillar of Defense.
