Former National Union of Journalists Chairman Elisha Spiegelman dead at 72

Elisha Spiegelman, a leading economics journalist, and a former head of Israel’s National Union of Journalists, passed away on Saturday at age 72. 
Spiegelman, who was a dedicated unionist, who fought not only for the rights of the journalists employed by the Israel Broadcasting Authority, but for all Israeli journalists who were union members, was both a radio and television reporter, editor and program anchor.
He joined Channel One’s news division in 1987, and quickly became head of the economics desk.
He was the first journalist to break the story of the conversion of Israeli currency from the lira to the shekel.
He anchored the popular consumer program Kolbotek for three years, and in later years was the editor of the Mabat weekend magazine.
His final role with the IBA was as its ombudsman.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
Spiegelman willed his body to science.
