France extradites Rwandan rebel to the Hague

PARIS — A Paris judicial official said France was extraditing a Rwandan rebel to the International Criminal Court to face accusations of orchestrating killings and rapes in neighboring Congo to gain political power.
An official at the Paris prosecutors office said that Callixte Mbarushimana was en route Tuesday to the court in the Hague, Netherlands, after a Paris appeals court ruling in November approved the transfer.
Mbarushimana, a 47-year-old leader of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, or FDLR, a Hutu rebel group, was arrested in Paris in October.
He is charged with 11 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, rape, persecution based on gender, and extensive destruction of property by the FDLR in 2009.
