BELGRADE - Germany will back Serbia's bid to secure candidacy status for European Union membership next month, after Belgrade improved ties with Kosovo and made political and economic reforms, Germany's foreign minister said on Thursday."The next step is the status of a European Union candidate. Germany would like to see this step to be taken at the next EU Council's meeting," Guido Westerwelle told reporters after meeting his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic. If EU members agree to approve candidacy for Serbia in March, it would be a major boost to the pro-Western coalition led by President Boris Tadic and his ally Ivica Dacic, the head of the Socialist Party.Foreign Minister Jeremic said the government in Belgrade, which faces elections in March, had done its best to implement EU recommendations from last December.
