Herzliya to provide free buses on Shabbat starting July 1

A sound uncharacteristic to Saturdays in Israel may soon be heard in Herzliya: the rumble of busses. On Tuesday, the city announced through a statement online that beginning July 1, the city will operate free public transportation on Saturdays between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
It will travel along the city's main thoroughfares and make stops at hospitals, beaches and recreational areas.
The buses will arrive at stations every 30 minutes, while a smaller, handicap-accessible bus will run once an hour.
The city's statement noted that the line, nicknamed the 'Summer Line' will not drive inside neighborhoods and "will not cause any sort of public disturbance."
Mayor Moshe Fadlon said the decision is a way "to allow all residents, even those who do not own cars, to easily get to recreation and entertainment areas…in an equal, comfortable manner."
He added that the routes "were chosen specially avoid causing any sort of hurt," possibly referring to the religious residents of the city. The effort was spearheaded by Deputy Mayor Maya Katz, who said the move was "good news for the thousands of residents, both young and old, that can now enjoy the variety of recreation that Herzliya has to offer."
According to the statement, deliberations are ongoing to decide which bus company will win the tender to run the buses.
