The IDF thwarted an attempted drug smuggling on the Egyptian border early Saturday, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit reported.
IDF troops positioned at the Faran Regional Brigade, tasked with defending the Israel-Egypt border, noticed suspicious activity near the fence and took swift action to apprehend the suspects, who attempted to escape while trying to burn evidence in the process.
Two suspects were arrested, in a joint operation that included IDF lookouts constantly reporting to the troops on the ground, and police forces who later arrived and provided further assistance.
The soldiers who made first contact and managed the situation as a whole were part of the Karakal Unit, where men and women serve together as combat soldiers and are trained to handle criminal activity and respond accordingly. According to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, the unit was only deployed in the area last week and has already proven its operational capability.
The suspects were handed over to the Israel Police and are expected to be interrogated in the following days.
