Knesset gives thumbs down on expanding health basket annually by 2 percent

The Knesset plenum rejected in a preliminary reading on Wednesday a private members’ bill that would increase by two percent a year the size of the national health services basket consisting of drugs and other medical technologies supplied by the health funds.
The bill, representing the recommendations of many public health experts for decades, was presentred by Meretz MK Ilan Gilon and a group of other MK. An automatic increase has long been opposed, however, by the Finance Ministry, which prefers to decide by how much the basket will be expanded and which for the last five years have given only NIS 300 million each year, a figure that has shrunk due to inflation and rising costs of medical technologies.
Thirty-eight MKs voted in favor and 43 against.
