Migron residents present counter offer to government
By TOVAH LAZAROFF
The residents of the endangered Migron outpost on Monday presented the government with a compromise solution aimed at preventing the forced demolition of their homes next month. The compromise expanded on an initial offer first made to them in January by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, with the help of Minister-without-Portfolio Benny Begin, to relocate their homes to a different portion of the same hilltop on which the outpost is now located.Last summer the court ordered the state to demolish the modular community of 50 families, because the homes were constructed without the proper permits on land that the state has classified as belonging to private Palestinians. The outpost is located in the Binyamin region of the West Bank, just outside of Jerusalem. To prevent a violent confrontation with the settlers, the prime minister’s office offered them the option to relocate their community to state land, located by the Psagot winery. There is no settlement on the hilltop at present. Should the Migron residents accept the offer, the government would be authorizing the first new West Bank settlement in over a decade.
