Syrian army locks down Bayda; staple supplies running low

A rights group in Syria has said that hundreds of people have been arrested in government raids on the coastal enclaves of Baniyas and Bayda, BBC reported Wednesday. While Baniyas has been in the news lately for the ethnic clashes that erupted there, nearby Bayda has stayed more or less out of the conflict.
On Wednesday, witnesses told BCC that the town had been locked down by Syrian troops, injuring dozens of people in clashes with the security forces. Soldiers were reportedly preventing ambulances from entering the town. Other residents reported that phone lines had been cut and the staple supplies, like bread and milk, were running low.
