A civilian employee of the military was killed and another worker was injured after a fire extinguisher exploded on an army base in central Israel on Tuesday, officials said.
He was identified as 38 year-old Shai Gabay from Givat Olga in the North. He died in hospital after being critically injured during routine work at the Tel Hashomer military base. Gabay worked as a technician on armored vehicles at the maintenance and repair center.
A second civilian worker was lightly injured in the blast and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Gabay was buried Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the New Hadera cemetery. The IDF said his family has requested no media coverage of the funeral.
The military stated that the head of the Technology and Logistics Division, Maj.-Gen. Itzik Turgman, has opened an investigation into the incident. Military Police also launched an investigation.
In May, a warehouse at the base caught fire following an explosion but was quickly extinguished.
