US readies to fly military families out of Japan

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon on Thursday was drafting plans to fly US military families out of part of Japan on a voluntary basis amid growing anxiety about radiation leaking from an earthquake-crippled nuclear power plant.
A US military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he expected the order would at least apply to the Naval Air Facility Atsugi, about 150 miles (241 km) from the Fukushima nuclear plant, and the Yokosuka Naval Base, about 200 miles (322 km) south of the plant.
The order was also expected to apply to the Yakota Air Base, located in the greater Tokyo region, he said. But officials warned that no order had been completed and that it was unlikely to extend beyond Japan's Honshu island.
