US, Yemen step up counter-terror fight, official says

WASHINGTON — The White House official in charge of counter-terror activities says joint US-Yemen efforts against extremists sometimes lead to tensions, with both sides expressing frustration with levels of cooperation and the pace of progress.
John Brennan told a Washington audience Friday that these differences are healthy and have not stopped the two countries from stepping up the fight against Yemen's al-Qaida offshoot, which recently tried to bring down two US-bound cargo planes with explosives packed in printer cartridges. The group was blamed for dispatching a bomber who failed an attempt to bring down a US-bound passenger plane last Christmas.
US officials say the group is believed planning another holiday attack somewhere in Europe, but they do not rule out an effort to mount a similar attack in the United States.
