More than 400 people gathered on June 6 to pay tribute to Sylvain Abitbol, the 2007 Negev Dinner Honouree of the Montreal chapter of the Jewish National Fund.
A past-president of Federation CJA and incoming co-president of Canadian Jewish Congress, Abitbol was honoured at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel for his leadership and humanitarian efforts on behalf of Israel and the Jewish community.
Abitbol's direction and example have assured greater representation of the multi-faceted Jewish community within its institutions inclusion that is the basis of his Negev Dinner campaign project, a Village for Autistic Young Adults in Beersheva Israel.
JNF Montreal President Renna Bassal thanked Abitbol for his excellence in communal leadership, demonstration of ethics and for his accomplishments and dedication. His community involvement was praised by an impressive roster of guests, including Israeli Consul General Marc Attali and the keynote speaker and human rights advocate Alan Dershowitz, who referred to Abitbol as "my new best friend Sylvain."
