The cabinet on Sunday approved the appointment of Harel Locker as the new director-general of the Prime Minister’s Office, four months after Eyal Gabai quit the key economic post.Locker, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s choice for the job, is the brother of Netanyahu’s Military Secretary Maj.-Gen. Yohanan Locker. He is to take over the position – which has been filled on an interim basis by cabinet secretary Tzvi Hauser – next Sunday.The director-general of the Prime Minister’s Office oversees policy dealing primarily with economic, social and civilian issues.He is also the point-man for the prime minister on large national projects. For example, Gabai was the central player in coordinating the ongoing construction of the 230-km. fence along the Egyptian border.Locker, 46, is partner with the large Tel Aviv law firm, S. Friedman & Co., specializing in tax law, real estate, commercial law, joint ventures and venture capital.Netanyahu told the cabinet on Sunday that Locker has a combination of skills that will allow him to succeed.He said Locker succeeded in the private sector, and was now joining the public sector out of “a sense of mission.”
