Salah TAU speech prompts emergency Knesset meeting

Knesset Education Committee chairman Alex Miller (Israel Beiteinu) announced on Wednesday that he has called an emergency meeting to discuss possible sanctions against Tel Aviv University after Islamic Sheikh Raed Salah’s recent controversial speech on campus.“Salah has been convicted of contact with the enemy and is known as one who accuses the Jews of all the evil in the world,” Miller said.RELATED:Raed Salah in Rahat: Israeli land belongs to Muslims Salah: We'll expel Israeli occupation from J'lem Salah begins five-month sentence “The purpose of his visit [in Tel Aviv University] was to make a dangerous provocation and incite violence.”Salah, the head of the Islamic Movement’s northern branch, called on Tuesday for the “liberation” of Jerusalem from Israeli authority, and criticized US President Barack Obama’s call for a Palestinian state on 1967 lines with land swaps, saying that such swaps would lead to the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes.“Two weeks ago, Haifa University decided to prevent Salah from giving a lecture and spreading his illegal messages of incitement. In light of this, we will consider putting sanctions on Tel Aviv University,” Miller said.Tel Aviv University said that it “adheres to the freedom of expression and allows public activities held by students.The university committee approves requests for public events as long as they don’t run the risk of endangering the public well-being or damaging property or are violations of the law.”“Since a previous appearance by Raed Salah on the campus in 2009 was held without any disturbance, the committee decided to allow the event to take place,” the university said, “including making sure that the event would be recorded in its entirety so that the statements made could be held up. It’s notable that this past visit by Raed Salah also passed without incident.”
