British prime minister seeks emergency UN summit on Myanmar aid

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown called for an emergency UN summit Wednesday, to coordinate efforts to rush aid to cyclone victims in Myanmar.
Brown told lawmakers during his weekly questions session in parliament that the military regime in Myanmar, also known as Burma, has shown some improvement in recent days, but is still blocking much of the aid being sent by other countries.
He said one British aid plane, carrying shelter for up to 45,000 people, had been allowed to land in Yangon and that three more were expected to land shortly.
"So there has been an improvement but it is not good enough," Brown said. "It is not good enough because the Burmese people are 1.5 million people who face famine or distress and it's not good enough because the regime is still preventing aid getting to the rest of the country."
