BERLIN – Ukrainian-Israeli billionarie Igor Kolomoisky was chosen as the new president of the European Council of Jewish Communities on Monday in a surprise announcement during a conference held in Berlin. The decision was made without approval by the board of the council and was met with disapproval by a number of those present, including at least one member of the board who told The Jerusalem Post he had resigned in protest. Nonetheless, officials from the council said the move would be approved at a meeting of the board in the coming weeks.Kolomoisky is the leading partner of the Ukrainian business group Privat Group and his wealth has been estimated at between $3 and $7 billion. He is a major benefactor of the Dnipropetrovsk Jewish community and the former head of the FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk football team. His appointment is expected to bring a badly needed influx of cash to the organization.
