Pakistani army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani rushed to Kabul for unscheduled meetings the day after Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation, Afghan officials said on Tuesday.
The officials said Kayani was to meet with Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Rahim Wardak, and spoke with President Hamid Karzai over the phone in Kabul on Tuesday.
Kayani was also likely to meet with the commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan.
The officials added that Kayani's visit to Kabul came as a surprise, and even top officials in the Afghan government didn't know he was coming.
