A student was shot dead and seven other Universitario club fans were wounded while on their way to a league football match Wednesday evening.
Police Gen. Javier Uribe told Lima's Radioprogramas that a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire on the eight fans, who were on their way to the National Stadium for a match between Universitario and Sporting Cristal.
Carlos Zamora, a doctor at the Cayetano Heredia hospital where the men were taken, said the 21-year-old student died in the operating room. Five of the seven wounded were between the ages of 14 and 17.
Witnesses interviewed by Radioprogramas said the gunman was a fan of Universitario's bitter rival Alianza Lima.
