The Public, a new television series about a female detective raised in the ultra-Orthodox community, will be executive produced by Hagai Levi, one of the creators of the megahit BeTipul (In Treatment) and The Affair.Levi is currently in postproduction on his upcoming series, Summer 2014, for HBO and Keshet International, in collaboration with Joseph Cedar.The Public will also be executive produced by Ben Giladi for EGG Films. Endeavor Content is representing the project worldwide.The series will be cowritten by Michal Aviram, one of the writers on Fauda, and the actress Romi Aboulafia, who has appeared in both Israeli and international films, including John Madden’s The Debt and Anthony Minghella’s Breaking and Entering. She will also star in the upcoming season of Endemol Shine’s Harem.The Public will tell the story of a once ultra-Orthodox detective who pretends to be religious again, as she returns to the community where she grew up to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a teenage girl. The story is inspired by an article that exposed an illegal adoption industry within the hassidic world, takes place in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Brooklyn, and will be in English, Hebrew and Yiddish.EGG Films is the company behind Netflix’s true crime documentary series Shadow of Truth. The company is currently in postproduction on The Coastal Road Killer, the next project by Shadow of Truth’s creators. Giladi’s credits also include Bart Layton’s American Animals and the Oscar-winning I, Tonya.
