A new artillery system will be developed for the Israel Defense Force by the Defense Ministry and Elbit Systems as part of a new line of advanced military equipment. The self-propelled howitzer gun systems will be delivered to the IDF within a 12-year period.
Director-general of the Defense Ministry Udi Adam signed the $125 million deal with Elbit to produce what will be the most advanced cannon of its kind with superior firing capabilities. They will eventually replace the existing IDF artillery system.
The deal is one of the largest and most complex procurement plans in the history of the ground forces and will be deployed over the next decade. The new cannon system will be capable of automatically choosing which type of shell to fire depending on the target. This will reduce the number of soldiers needed to operate the system.
