Postal Service issues commemorative stamp for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

The Stamp Authority of the Postal Service has issued a new stamp this month in honor of the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a revered religious leader and arbiter of Jewish law who died one year ago.The stamp, which has a denomination of two shekels, bears the image of Yosef poring over a volume of Jewish law in a picture taken by photographer Israel Bardugo.Along with the commissioning of the new stamp, the Stamp Authority has produced a commemorative package for the life of Yosef including nine stamps and a special booklet about the rabbi and his work, exclusive pictures from the family archive and copies of rare documents of Yosef’s writings. It is available for sale at post office branches and online.Yosef was renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of Jewish law and his adoption of a lenient approach to the everyday problems encountered by people in this realm. He served as Sephardi Chief Rabbi and later helped found the Shas movement, serving as its spiritual guide and ultimate authority for over a quarter of a century.Yosef died on October 7, 2013 and his funeral procession was attended by hundreds of thousands of people from across the religious and societal spectrum.
