Security personnel at Sde Dov Airport in northern Tel Aviv detected on Wednesday weapons stashed in a bag carried by a female passenger flying to Eilat.
X-ray scans of the luggage revealed the arms, which included a grenade, firearm cartridges and dozens of assault riffle bullets.
According to Army Radio, security officials were questioning the passenger, an Eilat resident, who claimed that the bag belonged to a relative.
The historic airport, located along the sea between Tel Aviv’s Yarkon River, was built in the late 1930s and is used for both short commercial flights and as an Israel Air Force base.
The small flight hub mainly operates domestic flights to Eilat, northern Israel and the Golan Heights.
