A 79-year-old woman was savagely assaulted and robbed in her Jerusalem apartment on Monday by a young assailant, police said.
The suspected attacker entered Rivka Boganim's flat in the city's Kiryat Hayovel neighborhood through her second floor balcony, beat her and then ripped a necklace off her neck, earrings off her ears and a bracelet off her hand before fleeing, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.
The woman, who tried to fight off her attacker as he entered her home, was moderately injured in the lunchtime attack.
After neighbors heard her shouts, they summoned police and she was evacuated by Magen David Adom to Hadassah-University Hospital at Ein Kerem.
Paramedics found the elderly woman lying on the floor with injuries to her face and bleeding heavily from her nose. The woman lived alone in the apartment.
Three suspects were detained for questioning.
By order of the Jerusalem police chief, a special police team was set up to the investigate the attack.
The brazen daytime assault and robbery was the latest in a series of attacks against seniors in Israel.
