Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip Sami Abu Zuhri said that the attack was Hamas' answer to reports circulated by Fatah that Hamas had agreed to a ceasefire. Abu Zuhri insisted that Hamas would continue its armed struggle against occupation, Israel Radio reported.
Fatah, in the meantime, claimed that the attack was engineered by Hamas leader-in-exile Khaled Mashaal in order to "torpedo" any agreement between the Palestinian factions on the prisoners document.
