US official makes unexpected visit to Lebanon

US Assistant Secretary of State David Welch, on an unexpected visit, held talks with the Lebanese Prime Minister Wednesday, government officials said. His journey to the Lebanese capital coincided with intensive international efforts to end four weeks of fighting between Israel and Hizbullah. Government officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information, gave no details about the meeting with Prime Minister Fuad Saniora. Welch, who was last here on Saturday, was expected to meet later in the day with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
