Five security personnel were killed in a clash with Kurdish rebels in Turkey's southeast on Saturday, state-run media in Turkey said.
Anatolia news agency cited military officials as saying the victims were village guards who were armed and paid by the government to help troops fight the rebels.
It said the clash took place near the border with Iraq in Sirnak province.
Local civil authorities could not immediately confirm Saturday's reports, but news agency Firat also said five guards were killed. Firat often carries statements of the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
