Lebanon: At least 11 people killed in clashes near Beirut
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF
Lebanese paramedics say at least 11 people have been killed in clashes between pro- and anti-government supporters in a mountain town near Beirut.
More than 20 people were also wounded in the town of Chouweifat, just southeast of Beirut. The area saw intense fighting until Lebanese troops deployed there late Sunday.
The paramedics spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to the media. They could not immediately provide casualty figures from other mountain towns where fighting also raged a day earlier.
The latest deaths raise to 49 the number of people killed since violence broke in Lebanon on Wednesday.
