Professor Faisal Azaiza was unanimously selected to serve as the new deputy chairman of the Planning and Budgetary Committee (PBC) of the Council for Higher Education (CHE) on Sunday.
“I feel great pride that I was given the opportunity to take part in shaping the future of the education system in Israel. I intend to act under both flags that have accompanied me during my actions. The first: excellence in higher education so that researchers will receive prizes and international status.  The second: accessibility of higher education to populations and communities that have not yet exhausted their potential for higher education, to open doors for them, to support them at the onset, and this, for the empowerment of social and economic integration,” said Azaiza on Sunday.
Prof. Azaiza has extensive experience in higher education in Israel.  He currently serves as the head of the School of Social Work at the University of Haifa and has served for 10 years as a member of the CHE and four years as a member of the PBC.  He is the first PBC member from the Arab population.
Manuel Trachtenberg, chairman of CHE's Planning and Budgeting Committee, said that Azaiza has been a “key partner” in promoting higher education in recent years and said he hoped to continue working together to further benefit the educational system.
